Four student-led projects from the MOHALA Lab were presented at the 2026 IEEE Haptics Symposium! Our projects explored wearable haptic devices, neuromuscular haptic interfaces, multimodal perception and reaction time, and cross-modal tactile illusions. Congratulations to our student researchers!
January 2026 — New Publication on Soft Robotic Actuator Design
Our work on the design optimization and data-driven modeling of active fiber-reinforced elastomeric enclosures was published in the Journal of Robotics! The work develops new approaches for designing and modeling soft robotic actuators.

Our work using smartphones to assess diabetic peripheral neuropathy was published in the Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology! The study explores accessible smartphone-based approaches for assessing sensory function in people with diabetes. Congratulations to the team!

Our work on an everting inflatable fabric manipulator for robotic apple harvesting was published in Smart Agricultural Technology! The project explores a low-cost soft robotic approach to agricultural automation.

Prof. Yoshida co-organized the Laulima Symposium, bringing together more than 200 participants from over 30 schools to build community and support students interested in STEM and higher education.

July 2025 — New Publication on Gamifying Haptics User Studies
Our work, “Gamifying Haptics User Studies: Comparison of Response Times From Smartphone Interfaces,” was published in IEEE Transactions on Haptics! The study explores how smartphones and gamification can make haptics user studies more engaging and accessible while examining trade-offs between gamified and traditional psychophysical experiments.
